The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) announced the policy targets for the 2021-2030 cycle of the ABC+ (namely, Plan for Adaptation and Low Carbon Emission in Agriculture). They include a 1.1-billion-ton reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) announced the policy targets for the 2021-2030 cycle of the ABC+ (namely, Plan for Adaptation and Low Carbon Emission in Agriculture), the ten-year initiative to mitigate the effects of climate change and carbon emissions in agricultural production, provided by the National Policy on Climate Change (Law n.º 12.187/2009). The new 2021-2030 cycle was launched in January (see the 20th edition of the Regulatory Report) and its strategic vision was published in April (see the 23rd edition of the Regulatory Report).
The Federal Government’s targets for 2030, announced by MAPA (available here), comprise a 1.1-billion-ton cut back on greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalent); the adoption of sustainable production technologies across 72.7 million hectares (727 thousand square kilometers); increasing the treatment of animal waste by 208.4 million cubic meters; and the processing of 5 million cattle under intensive pasture management systems.
According to the official press release from the Federal Government, the ABC+ targets are in line with the Brazilian adhesion to the Global Methane Pledge (30% global cutback on methane emissions by 2030) and the Glasgow Leader’s Declaration on Forests and Land Use during the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The COP 26 pledges are also provided in the Brazilian Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) within the Paris Agreement framework.
The ministry also published the English versions of three technical studies exploring innovative technologies for the implementation of the ABC+ initiative, available on MAPA’s website:
